Workshop Information and more

HIGHLY IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ

In the workshop information below, you will find links to download handout material that will be used in some of the classes. You MUST print and bring these handouts if you attending the classes that are using them. They will NOT be available at the festival. Here is why:

As our festivals have grown, we have caught the attention of various music industry individuals and have been advised of certain legalities. Technically, the distribution, paid for or not, of any printed, copyrighted sheet music without authorization from the copyright owners constitutes infringement. Many of the ukulele club books you might own or have seen are technically in violation as well and the industry is beginning to enforce their rights. We want to do everything properly and avoid these legal hassles.

Therefore, it is the responsibility of each instructor to provide their own class materials and wade through the myriad of rules for their own purposes. We post the materials they have provided as a convenience to you, but otherwise can no longer be involved in physical distribution. Thank you for your understanding. Gotta love lawyers!

James Hill & Anne Janelle

I’m not going to type any canned bio here. In my humble opinion, James Hill is the most creative, unique ukulele performer on the planet. I’d rather watch James perform than any other solo player I’ve seen, and I’ve seen many. On Saturday night, James and his lovely lady Anne Janelle on cello will headline our concert finalé.

WORKSHOP: “BOOSTER UKE”

CLICK OR RIGHT CLICK HERE (depending on operating system) to download and print handouts for James Hill’s workshop. There is one class, repeated four times.

Victoria Vox

Victoria Vox & Jack Maher

Victoria Vox also falls into the “unique” category that I absolutely love. She was the first call I made for my first uke fest, and she’s headlined the first of every new major uke event I’ve produced. Her songwriting skills and performing style are on par with anyone in any singer-songwriter genre and she’s carved out her own unique identity. Victoria is now teamed with another superb talent, her new hubby Jack Maher. This new “Royal Couple of Uke” will headline our Friday night concert as well as teach some exceptional workshops.

WORKSHOPS:

Victoria: Who Needs a Drummer When I’ve Got Uke? – Levels: Early player through advanced.
Are you ready to take your ukulele playing to the next level? In this Intermediate class, we’ll play with movable chord shapes, left-hand muting, strumming patterns, and how to “chunk” (create your own back beat). These are all simple techniques to improve your rhythm and playing style. Good times guaranteed! NO HANDOUT FOR THIS CLASS

Jack: Ukulele in a Guitar World – Levels: Intermediate
The ukulele is in the guitar family, however they each have their own personalities, plus techniques that are interchangeable with a little forethought. You will learn to add guitar’s best features to your uke repertoire and walk away with some cool riffs to spice up your playing. NO HANDOUT FOR THIS CLASS

Julie Holloman

Julie has loved and played music her whole life. She studied Music Education at the University of Nevada Reno, and graduated Suma Cum Laude with a B.S. in Music Education in 1990. She taught K-6 Elementary Music for 13 years, receiving the Distinguished Service Award for outstanding teaching from both the Music Department and the School District.

In December 2009 she established the Aria School of Music & Art. Aria is a 501(c)(3) non-profit music school, and is able to help students receive private lessons at little or no cost. Aria is home to the Reno Ukulele Group, and offers three ukulele classes.

Julie teaches piano, voice, and mandolin, in addition to her main instrument, Flamenco Guitar. As the ukulele became more popular, she ported her Flamenco class to the uke. Her class is an annual favorite at our Reno Ukulele Festival and we are extremely happy that she will join us for the first time in Palm Springs!

Abe Lagrimas, Jr.

Yet another master musician that took me way too long to book to one of our festivals, Abe is a stupendous multi-instrumentalist, equally comfortable on drums, vibraphone, and of course, ukulele. He lives in the jazz world, but he teaches techniques that cross all genres. At the 2016 Reno Uke Fest, he teamed with Craig Chee and Sarah Maisel in an outrageous, glorious, instrument swapping concert that had the audience roaring.

Michael Powers

I met Michael in 2002, long before the ukulele was just a glint in my Daddy’s eye. No wait, I mean long before the ukulele took over my life! Michael is a multi-instrumentalist who is best known for playing jazz guitar with such luminaries as Ray Charles, Herbie Hancock, and Gladys Knight. After becoming friends, I asked him if he could port his guitar skills to the ukulele. He did so, and even produced a killer CD called “Urban Ukulele.”

Michael will perform throughout the festival and will teach workshops for the uBass and Advanced Jazz Techniques.

Dani Joy Herreid

Dani Joy is a third generation music teacher and also a talented performer. She has been part of our ukulele family for many years, teaching each year at Reno. She is always my first choice for our “Newbie” classes, as she has an easy going and accessible style that gets students motivated quickly.

Dani Joy will also teach a bonus intermediate workshop on Thursday afternoon in which she splits the class in half and arranges a two part rendition of Vince Guaraldi’s Peanuts Classic, “Linus & Lucy.” After the workshop, she will kick off our Thursday poolside entertainment. (Weather permitting.)

LUE TEST DRIVE

Peter Luongo has amazed audiences for over thirty years as director of the acclaimed Langley Ukulele Ensemble, an international touring group made up of teens and young adults that use the multi-part uke to back multipart harmonies. In 2016, Peter and I partnered to create the Luongo Ukulele Experience, an ensemble program for adults based on his Langley group.

You can read all about it on our LUE page. For now I’ll just paste in the first few lines… Awaken The Musician Within! There’s nothing like the LUE anywhere else in the ukulele world, and there is no better word for it than experience. Peter Luongo directs an inspirational, high energy, two-day program for adults that extracts musical skills and achievement beyond what the participants ever thought they could accomplish. If you’re at a time in your life where you want a challenge, a purpose for getting good at the ukulele and music in general, and have the drive, resources, and time to indulge your interest, this is the program!

The LUE Test Drive will be offered at 3:30 Friday and Saturday. You should have well developed ukulele and vocal skills to fully experience this demonstration of the Luongo Ukulele Experience. NO HANDOUTS FOR THE TEST DRIVES.
